The advice is typical of so many Tai Chi students and teachers that I've met who focus on the wrong things, thinking they're doing Tai Chi. They do this because their teacher taught them a weak version of this art. The result -- you meet their students and see quickly that they have no concept of body mechanics.

Here--briefly--is his list of top ten important things to focus on:

Concept 1: Tai Chi is done with an emphasis on every movement. Every pattern must be connected with one another.

Concept 2: Maintain your shoulders dropped so that any tension will be eliminated.

Concept 3: Your wrists should be straight in order to maintain strength and a good flow of energy.

Concept 4: Learning to move ever more slowly is one path to increased cultivation.

Concept 5: Never let any hindrances stop you from being connected. In case you get disconnected, keep up with the motions.

Concept 6: In practicing Tai Chi, your knees must always be bent. Also you need to maintain your balance for your height not to bob up and down.

Concept 7: Power of Tai Chi will start from the feet going up to the legs, controlling the shoulders and will be expressed by the fingers and hands.

My Response to these Concepts

Most of these concepts are things that you need to know and do -- but they are FAR from the top ten concepts you need. These are--in my opinion--things to think of after you begin focusing on the top concepts that you need to know.

Concepts 1 and 10 I can buy into. You must be connected through the body. As you progress, you should focus on the breathing with the dan t'ien, but that is NOT done effortlessly at first. It takes practice and focus.

Concepts 2 and three are just silly. Yes, you should relax your shoulders and "drop" them, and usually you try to keep the wrists straight. Rather than focus on the shoulders as this teacher does, I encourage students to drop their weight -- "sink their chi" -- and relax everything, including the shoulders while you maintain ground and peng (see below for my list of concepts).

Concept 4 is just wrong. Learning to move ever more slowly is the key? Actually, you learn to move properly in slow motion, you move faster and faster, learning fa-jing and how to apply the movements in self-defense. The more advanced you get, the more you are able to do the forms properly at both slow and combat speeds. Tai Chi is a martial art, first and foremost.

Concept 5 is a distraction. Don't get distracted? Well of course. That also applies to reading a book.

Concept 6 tells you to keep your knees bent. This is another way to say relax and sink your weight.

He almost nails Concept 7. Power does start in the ground, travels through the legs -- but he ignores the key concept that it is guided by the dan t'ien and then is expressed through the hands (or whatever part of the body is striking). Inserting the shoulders here is goofy. The power has to go through the shoulders but they are conduits for internal strength and should be kept out of play as much as possible except in certain circumstances involving kou energy.

Concepts 8 and 9 are pieces of advice told to all Tai Chi students. Yes, you keep your head up and balanced. The chest is slightly hollowed and the back slightly rounded but this is part of the whole body connection.

The Real Concepts You Must Focus on in Tai Chi

1. Establish and Maintain the Ground Path: All strength and power originates in the ground. You must maintain the ground connection throughout every movement, even the movements that some people call "transitions" (there are no transitions in Tai Chi, there are only fighting applications).

2. The Most Important Energy is Peng Energy and it Must Be Maintained At All Times: Peng requires the ground connection. It's an expansive force, as if your body is inflated like a balloon. When you try to push a basketball or beach ball into a pool of water, peng is the feeling you get that -- even though the ball is going into the water, pressure is building for it to spring back. Peng and the ground path must be connected through all movement. If it isn't, you aren't doing Tai Chi. Peng is involved in every "energy" in Tai Chi.

3. All Movement Must Be Connected Through the Body: Whole-body movement is crucial. Power should flow like a ribbon from the ground, connected. All I have to do is ask another Tai Chi person to grab me with both hands and pull me down. It becomes quickly obvious that they have no concept of whole-body movement.

4. Silk-Reeling is a Key Component of Tai Chi: It's amazing how poorly this skill is taught, when it is one of the founding principles of Tai Chi. Yang LuChan would have learned it in the Chen Village before he created Yang style, but it has been lost. Some teachers actually say that silk-reeling happens when you "imagine" chi spiraling from the ground through the attacking hand. That's wrong, too. Silk-reeling is a way of spiraling and moving power in a connected way through the body. It relies on the first three concepts (ground, peng and whole-body movement) plus the next two.

5. Dan Tien Rotation: Grandmaster Chen Xiaowang says Tai Chi is "One Principle, Three Techniques." The main principle is "Dan Tien guides all movement and when one part moves, all parts move." The three techniques are "dan tien rotating side to side; dan t'ien rotating over and back; dan t'ien rotating in a combination of these directions. Dan t'ien rotation must be involved in every movement.

6. Opening and Closing the Kua: Some past Tai Chi masters have said that "to understand the kua is to understand Tai Chi." But I see Tai Chi players all the time who couldn't find their kua with both hands because they've never been taught this concept. Every movement in Tai Chi involves opening one kua and closing the other in some way.

7. Maintain a Centered Stance: I saw a video recently of a guy teaching tai chi and he began Grasp The Swallow's Tail. His right hip suddenly stuck out to the right and it appeared that the slightest push would send him off-balance. In Chen tai chi, standing stake is used to help you relax, sink, develop peng, build leg strength, tuck the hips slightly and remain centered -- but then almost every movement in the form is performed to maintain a centered stance. This is one reason early Chen students are made to hold stances while they are corrected until their legs give out and they fall on the floor. It takes a lot of strength to hold a centered stance. The better the stance, the harder it is to hold. And this is one reason you see such powerful legs on Chen masters. If you think pain is not involved in Tai Chi practice, you are not studying Tai Chi.

Those are my top concepts of internal movement. You add to this little things like keeping the head up, hollow the chest, keep the knees slightly bent, and the small things that help refine your Tai Chi.

Americans are prone to self-delusion. If a guy tells us he's a master, we believe it and everything he says is the truth and it can't be denied. And by golly if my master tells me I'm learning Tai Chi, then I'm learning Tai Chi.

Put these "masters" in front of the real deal and they crumble like a house of cards. In the meantime, they're teaching Americans the wrong things, having them "cultivate chi" instead of learn to move properly. They focus on the trees -- keeping the wrists straight and the shoulders sunk--and they ignore (or don't know) the forest, where the real skills are. Often, these teachers don't know any better.

The best you can do for yourself is to NOT believe everything an authority figure tells you, but to investigate, research and compare, and don't close your mind to the possibility that you just might be learning pretty poor quality Tai Chi.

Each year the number of U.S. veterans increases as soldiers returning from America's most recent wars come home. However, as the survivors are welcomed home after pursuing a dutiful career serving their country, a new generation of men and women suffering from mild- to severe-traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are greeted with battled medical budgets and flawed TBI technologies, which don't provide the necessary services and treatments required to improve their newly developed disabilities.

With an average of 1.4 million Americans undergoing some form of TBI, the number of scientists and researchers striving to cure these individuals should be ever increasing, however, dwindling budgets continue to compress and squeeze war-related brain injury funding. In 2006, the U.S. House and Senate slashed the allocated funding for the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center (DVBIC) in half from the previous year.

Traumatic brain injury has been deemed the "signature" injury of the Iraq war, according to military doctors and experts. It is imperative for struggling soldiers to find assistance with their TBI-related disability.

What is TBI?

Traumatic brain injury is defined as an injury that occurs after an abrupt trauma causes damage to the brain, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). War-related TBI can occur in many ways and individuals suffering from this and related side effects will find symptoms vary on a case-by-case diagnosis.

* 20 percent of all frontline infantry troops suffer from concussions during combat.

*The Pentagon has declined screenings for all returning troops and only screen a small population of soldiers.

*If left untreated or untested, multiple head injuries and concussions can cause permanent brain injury.

Also, several equally disturbing statistics have been reported from several specialized journals including Brain Injury, Internal Medicine, Soldiers Magazine, MIT's Technology Review and Perspectives in Psychiatric Care. These statistics area as follow:

* Nearly 25 percent of all military veterans of the Iraq war are diagnosed with a mental illness.

* War-related TBI patients often manifest distinct personality changes.

* Of the 35,000 soldiers screened for TBI, approximately 11 percent have had symptoms of mild TBI.

* No treatments currently exist to cure long-lasting symptoms of TBI.

Flawed Brain Injury Technology

Unfortunately, as budgets are cut, the quality of care and technology also decreases. Most recently the Government Accountability Office (GAO) reviewed nine Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers and found that the TBI-screening test's validity and reliability may be flawed.

Additionally, the report found that soldiers with TBI may be receiving inadequate or unnecessary care for their brain injuries, according to an Associated Press article from January 2008. The report found that:

* Although the VA has implemented TBI screening tools, the validity and reliability of the tool has not yet been established.

* The VA has implemented a protocol to ensure soldiers testing positive for TBI are adequately treated; however, many of the VA's medical facilities either did not follow the protocol or had difficulty doing so.

* Culturally, the VA has found that Iraq veterans feel the VA and its facilities cater to elderly veterans and do not want to treat young veterans.

* The VA is struggling with poor rural access to medical centers as well as poor turnout rates for injured vets who in some cases must drive 100 miles plus to reach a nearby VA hospital.

Living With TBI

Veterans who are currently living with TBI will find that not only does TBI affect them, but the ripple effect among an injured veteran's family and friends is quite extensive. There are an array of clinical trials that a TBI victim can become involved in to improve the living conditions as well as to treat the symptoms of TBI. I've been thinking about the advantages and disadvantages of downsizing to a smaller home after retirement. This is what I've come up with so far...

Advantages

The first and most obvious advantage is that, if your existing home is worth a lot of money because of its location and size, and/or you have a lot of equity in it, the sale of the home could give you a cushion of money to make life in retirement a little easier and fund some of those 'bucket list' adventures.

I'm assuming that you would be moving to a property that would be easier to manage as you got older - not one that's going to make life more difficult (although I accept that I could be biased because cleaning and other assorted, household-related tasks are not really my thing and I can't imagine that ANYONE would CHOOSE to spend MORE time engaged in those activities!)

Downsized would, presumably, mean cheaper as far as heating, cooling and property tax bands are concerned.

If you like decorating and/or DIY, you might relish the idea of 'doing up' another home and putting your personal stamp on it.

You could have a fresh start and get rid of some of the clutter and 'stuff' that you've accumulated over the years. (Although having to get rid of much-loved stuff because you can't fit it into your new place could also be a disadvantage...)

And, of course, downsizing would also bring the opportunity to look for a neighbourhood with close proximity to the amenities and services that will be useful in later life if your health deteriorates and you can no longer drive.

Disadvantages

The most obvious disadvantage that springs to mind is leaving your old home, neighbourhood, and friends and neighbours behind...

...which means acquiring new neighbours - which could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on the personalities of those new neighbours.

There is, of course, an emotional cost to leaving a home where you raised a family and spent many happy years of your life. If you're downsizing from the family home, you may also meet some resistance from your kids for the same emotional reasons.

Another big disadvantage MAY be that a downsized home may mean a 'not-as-nice-as-the-old-one' home... or a 'not-enough-room-when-friends-and-family-come-to-stay' home (although this could, equally, be an advantage and a useful excuse if you don't particularly enjoy the company of some of your friends and family members).

A smaller home might mean a smaller or non-existent garden (again, not a problem for someone like me - I hate gardening and it would save me the cost of having to pay someone else to do it for me!).

Moving home can be stressful at any age and, I suspect that, the older you get, the more stressful it feels. And, of course, the costs associated with selling a home and buying another will only add to that stress!

I've moved 8 times in my adult life - twice, temporarily, to apartments which brought me into close proximity with my neighbours. In my experience, the worst thing about downsizing to a smaller place is the fact that you, very often, put yourself closer to other people and their noise. The thing that I love best about living in a detached house is the fact that I don't have someone else's noise (from blaring music, social activities, domestic arguments, etc) coming through my walls.

I think if I was considering making a permanent move to somewhere with a party-wall, I would, at the very least, have to ask my potential new neighbours (as nicely as possible) if they were likely to be noisy, and I'd probably go around the neighbourhood, knocking on doors and canvassing the opinion of the inhabitants about the peace and quiet of the area. I think that, when you're downsizing to a place that you hope to stay in for the rest of your life, you need to be more discerning than you have ever been at any other time in your property-hunting life - particularly if you're buying a home. (If you're renting you can, at least, move on again after the initial rental period is up!)

Many people who like to have access to theatres, cinemas, restaurants, etc, consider moving to city centre apartments in retirement. I lived in a city centre apartment for six months and, whilst I loved the bustle, buzz and convenience of city centre life, I definitely didn't love being wakened every Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning at 3 am when the casino around the corner opened its doors and disgorged, en masse, its patrons, who then either tried to extend their evening's entertainment by continuing their conversations on the street beneath my window or roamed the area, noisily looking for taxis to take them home.

Maybe the key to all this is to rent a home (of a similar size and quality to the one you're considering downsizing to) for six months, before committing yourself to a permanent move. At the end of the six-month period, you'll have a much clearer picture about the viability - and sustainability - of such a move, and, if you've hated every minute of living there, you can lick your wounds in your old pad and re-adjust your downsizing plans in the light of the knowledge gleaned from the experience...

The recently unveiled trailer shown here is the first glimpse we've had of The Last Exorcism, directed by Daniel Stamm, whose last movie was the disturbing A Necessary Death in 2008.

Set on a dilapidated Louisiana farm, Reverend Cotton Marcus agrees to perform one final exorcism on a possessed teenager. Desperate for a bit of cash, Marcus consents to carry out his rites in front of a documentary crew, and the gory, shadowy events shown here is some of the resulting footage.

The trailer is crammed with plenty of familiar horror movie tropes - aggressive backwater yokels and screaming, lank-haired women, but Stamm's previous form could make The Last Exorcism a late summer fright-fest worth keeping an eye on.

The Last Exorcism is due for release on 27 August.

Last month we lost an hour of sleep with daylight savings time. This month the tax man cometh, Mother Nature is sending spring storms and the event calendar says that April is Stress Awareness Month. Now I know most of you dont need the calendar to remind you about stress. According to the Merriam-Webster tome, stress is a state of mental tension and worry caused by problems in your life, work, etc.; something that causes strong feelings of worry or anxiety.

Stress is not always a bad thing; some stress is normal and useful. Stress is the catalyst that can aid us in responding and reacting quickly and energetically. This is the fight or flight response that we need when we are in danger. It is useful and can also benefit us when we need a burst of energy to complete a task or athletic feat.

However the negative side of stress becomes apparent when we find ourselves in an ongoing pattern of stress. It becomes apparent when it affects our healthweakens the immune system, interferes with sleep patterns, causes overeating, headaches , stomach problems or back pain along with other ailments that affect good health and well-being.

Recent research by the American Psychological Association (APA) indicates that adults are getting fewer hours of sleep, skipping exercise, and engaging in unhealthy eating behaviors due to stress. In fact, 38% say they have overeaten or eaten unhealthy foods in the past month because of stress, and 43% say stress has caused them to lie awake at night in the past month.

To stress less, the key is to recognize what is creating your stress and how to manage it. Here are tips to jumpstart the healthy you program.

Sleep
As the research pointed out, nearly half of adults say stress causes sleep interruptions, so lets have a look at sleep. Seven to eight hours of sleep is recommended for adults. In order to get there; try making these all part of your daily routine:

Keep your bedtimes and wake times on a constant schedule.
Avoid spending time on the computer, smartphone or other electronic devices that are stimulating just before going to bed.
Allow yourself 15 minutes of quiet time to wind down.

Stress impacts what we eat, how much we eat and when we eat. Below are tips to help avoid overeating and some of my favorite stress-reducing foods to stock up on:

Eat several small meals throughout the day. Eating a small amount every three to four hours keeps the blood sugar levels even, keeping the mind and body calmer.
When you feel hungry, try drinking a beverage and wait 20 minutes, often youre thirsty not hungry. And remember that all calories count, even in your beverages, so pay attention to what you drink, too! Im a fan of water with a squeeze of lemon, but if youre looking for a bit more flavor, there are lots of low and no-calorie options out there like iced tea, vitamin water and diet soda.
Make it a habit to eat breakfast because skipping this critical first meal often leads to overindulgence before lunchtime.
Keep your cubicle stocked with pre-portioned snacks that satisfy, like a small bag of almonds or a granola bar. Rather than rule out favorites, seek them out in portion-control sizes like the Coke Mini or the Minute Maid Coolers.
Science shows us that these foods and nutrients aid in managing stress:

Vitamin B - green vegetables, potatoes, fresh fruit, wheat germ, wholegrain cereals, sea food, poultry, peas, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds and dried fruit.

The trick is to find physical activity that you enjoy. Make it a priority, scheduling time to exercise on your calendar. Consider these other ways to keep active:

Get a buddy, teaming up can help you stay committed and motivated.
If you cannot set aside a 30 to 45-minute block of time, do several 5-10-minute segments daily.
If exercising at home, minimize distractions.
Avoid vigorous exercise about three hours before going to bed, although gentle stretching is ok.
Always have an alternative activity that you can do, such as riding a stationary bike at home or doing an aerobics video if you cant get to the gym or weather limits outdoor exercise.

You may not be able to do all of these immediately, but give your health a higher priority by taking steps to manage and lower stress in your life.

Extreme busyness is a chronic disease that afflicts many moms today. As a matter of fact, I was just listening to the One Month to Live DVD by Kerry and Chris Shook. They identified three passion busters. I'm not talking about sexual passion, although I'm sure your husband would love that. The three factors that kill our passion for life are bitterness, burnout and busyness. I'm only going to focus on busyness right now because it is a huge source for not only zapping our passion, but also our energy.

Look around you. Talk to your mom friends. Would any of them tell you they are bored with very little to do? What I hear all the time is "I'm so busy". Raising a family is typically busy. The more children you have, the busier you are. The less help you have, the harder it is. Although extreme busyness is the "norm" in many families, there are other ways to live. If you want to regain your passion and energy for life, try doing life a little bit differently.

Slim Down Your Calendar
Last night, the leader of our church community group told us she was stepping down for a little while. As the mother of two teenagers, a wife to a pastor, a full-time employee and an active volunteer at church, she was spent. She had very little energy or time, and her busy schedule was having a great impact on her spiritual life and her emotional well-being.

When you look at your volunteer activities, work schedule, social commitments and extracurricular interests in your family, is there more than you can handle? Do you go from one activity to the next, wondering when you will ever have the time to sit down and relax? It might be time to let go of everything that is not absolutely important to you. At first, you may think that everything is important, but ask yourself the real purpose for everything you do. If you do anything out of guilt, obligation, trying to fit in, competing with other people or to fill an emotional void, it's time to rethink your commitments. If you were told you only had 30 days left to live, would you fill your life with endless activities, or would you just spend time loving your family and friends?

Force Yourself to Take Down Time
Forget about the countless items on your to do list for a little while. I can guarantee they will be there when you come back. Force yourself to take some time to relax and do absolutely nothing. It is okay to sit in a chair and daydream or lie down on your bed and read a good book. Often, I take a 20 minute break during the day. I lie down with the sole intention of clearing my mind and letting go of everything I need and want to do. I force myself to be still until I am thinking about nothing whatsoever (and yes, I work and have children). I get up completely recharged and ready to be productive. Taking down time is not only acceptable, but necessary for maintaining our energy for motherhood.

Savor the Simple Moments
When we are too busy, we miss the simple moments of life. I remember going outside with my son one morning to complete a school project. He needed to collect several different kinds of leaves. As we moved from tree to tree plucking leaves, my mind was a thousand miles away. I was thinking about everything else going on in life. My son's words jolted me back to reality. He looked at me and said "Isn't this fun, mom?" Wow! How could I have missed this simple moment? What matters most in life are the moments we share with people we love. It's those moments that we often take for granted. We assume they will be there tomorrow when we have more time. The problem is that time never comes - it has to be created. When we create the time to really drink in those magical moments, our soul is filled and our energy is refreshed.

Be Different Than Everyone Else
You don't have to live the same life as your neighbor or your best friend. You don't have to fill your life with endless commitments or place unreasonable expectations on yourself just because all the moms you know are doing it. You can be the change that helps slow this world down. You can be the example that people follow when they simply want to relax and enjoy life a little bit more. You can be the mom with a smile on her face, a peace in her heart, and a contagious passion for life.

Heart-healthy diets always suggest limiting the ingestion of red meat, and it should be the same for cancer-preventing diets. Always make sure you're not eating more than 11 ounces of red meat per week. The fat and cholesterol within red meat can increase your odds of contracting cancer, so take it easy on the meat.

Watch out for cancer treatment scams. After being diagnosed with cancer, you may feel desperate to try any treatment you can find. However, you should be careful and fully research any treatment method you are considering. If a cancer "cure" sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
